Opinion polls

Poll of polls

I’ve added a poll of polls to the blog. You can find it on the top right-hand side of the homepage.

It shows a simple rolling average of all the polls from the past seven days. I’ll keep it updated regularly, which – given the frequency of new opinion polls – will be almost every day.

I’m not for one moment implying this poll of polls contains any clues about the result of the general election. I very much doubt any nationwide polls will be able to anticipate precisely what happens on 7 May, given the huge variations in support for the main political parties that we’re likely to see right across the country.

But whether we like it or not polls do influence morale within the parties, besides shaping some of the narrative of the election campaign. The poll of polls will give a flavour of this, besides offering a snapshot of public opinion.
